Are you DONE with it?

Only a few days and this year will end.Do you really think all of our troubles will go away just because we begin a new year? Of course not.

I am not going over all the stuff the media reviews each time a year ends. We lived it, we know what happened, don't we? We all know it has been a horrible year for all of us with the racial unrest, the election along with the impeachment, an extremely hot summer, California burning, businesses closing, and of course the COVID pandemic and SO MANY lives lost. Who could forget all of that? I can't.

We all hope the memories of 2020 will melt away and 2021 will bring bright and sunny days ahead. Well I am sorry to break it to you but, it ain't over just yet. COVID is still here and we, yes WE, have to control ourselves to stop it by getting vaccinated, WEAR MASKS, social distancing, washing your hands and staying away of large group gatherings. People, I know it's hard. It's not in our make-up to do these things, but we have to.

It's hard to know people are dying and their loved ones can not be with them. The people who care for us are dying, the first responders are dying. It's hard to visit with someone who is infected and see them through plastic or glass. I know because I've been there. Being a retired firefighter for 26 active years, I have been exposed to all kinds of crap and was very lucky I never caught anything bad except a cold. But my co-workers today are.

Nancy and I placed her mother in a care home in May. My wife and I would go to visit with her and had to sit on the front porch talking to her through a screened sliding window due to COVID regulations. It was 110 degrees then. We could hold her, or touch her. She had dementia and was hard of hearing, so it was not easy to see her that way. She had no clue about what the world was in then. She passed in October peacefully.

I hate all of this just as much as anyone. I want to travel to other countries and RV around the USA like we have in the past. But I know that one day it WILL be over and we can get back to normal again. I have faith you all will do the right things to stop this pandemic. Because you want what I want too.

Happy new Year, God bless you all and stay safe.

What is better, nice or kindness?

When I was on the fire department, our Fire Chief had stickers made to say, "BE NICE". I still see them on bumpers and fire truck today. But is being nice good enough? Of course we should be nice to others, but how is that different from kindness?

By definition, nice is being pleasant, courteous and polite. On the other hand, kind is being, warmhearted, friendly and generous in nature. And in there is the point.

Christmas is the time people generally think of giving. Yes, gifts under the tree, watch children when they open that special gift they asked Santa for, and dropping some change in the red pot with the person ringing the bell, or giving the poor soul on the street your old coat because they have none. Kindness to me is taking those nice thoughts and making them into an action which helps someone.

I believe being nice goes hand and hand with kindness. And kindness does not necessarily mean to give money or objects, but maybe to just listen to someone when they have no one to talk to, or the visit someone who has no family or friends. And yes, we are still in a Pandemic which makes it harder but you will find a way.  A way that will light up someone's face and give them joy, even for a few minutes, or maybe turn their life around. Just for the mere fact that you are showing some kindness to who maybe a complete stranger. That alone may get them courage and hope all is not lost, and someone cares.

I once bought a homeless man a couple sandwiches and a bottle of milk when our fire truck stopped to get drinks after a fire call. The expression on the man face was all I needed. I sat down next to him and he told me, he had not eaten for a couple days, and I was the only person who stopped to see if he was OK. He was down on his luck and had no money. I directed him to a shelter farther into town and my crew all chipped in for bus fare. I never saw him again and pray he is doing well.

My point is, being nice and kind does not have to be expensive. It is just doing and being that person you really are. These are hard times for many people. Helping someone or family will make this Christmas season a better season for that person and for you too.

May your God bless you all, and Merry Christmas. Remember, in ALL religions, the Golden Rule is the same, no matter what you believe.

What an interesting year

2020 is a year that most of us will never forget. One of hottest years on record, fires all over the West, racial unrest, an election that got really ugly, and then there was Covid19.

But to reflect on our year, probably much like yours, we stayed home a lot. Nancy making quilts and watching the grandkids, and me in the shop.

January saw Nancy’s mother becoming frail, losing weight, and her memory. We started talking about moving her into a care home.

February began with friends from New Mexico visiting and then the Ohio family came out to celebrate Nancy’s mother’s (Beverly) 90th birthday and Nancy’s 70th, which Nancy and some friends held an “0” party for those rounding the decade. Our family also remembered it was 5 years since our son Tony passed.

In March, Nancy and I were getting excited about our April trip to New Zealand… but then all travel was cancelled, and so was our trip. Many businesses were shut down and new restrictions were sat in place.

As April rolled around, I was juggling three cars for restoration and repair, and Beverly continued to deteriorate mentally. Nancy and I decided it was time to move her someplace with 24 hour care. So now we had to sale her house to pay for her support.

May became very interesting with a large 3 alarm brush fire within less than ¼ mile of our house. We moved Bev into a private care home that was only a couple miles from the house. I began to sub-out auto jobs due to my left knee hurting so much. A visit to an orthopedic doctor confirmed my theory, I am getting old and arthritis was the culprit.

June was brutal with temperatures over 105 for many, many days. I stayed in the shop most of the day and Nancy was hiking at 5 AM in the shadows of the mountains around us.

By July, we were all going crazy with being shut-in, so our family pulled our campers up north to John and Tina’s property and camped over the 4th holiday. I was great to be cool and outside.

Another hotter than normal August with California, Arizona, and most western states on fire. Bev’s house was in escrow and hopefully would close soon. I was getting shots in my left knee which helped somewhat.

September was the same-old-same-old, except I attended more funerals of retired firefighters.

On the 26th of October, Beverly Jane Huelsman passed quietly in her sleep. We received the call early that morning from the care home when they found her lying in bed motionless. Now Nancy and I both had no living parents.

Finally in November it became a little cooler weather. After living in our house for over 20 years, Nancy and I started talking about updating things, starting with the kitchen. Our crew of retired firefighters and I were again at the Good Guys car show displaying our beautiful 1978 American LaFrance fire truck we restored 5 years previously. Thanksgiving was at our house with family and good friends. Our largest gathering since the Pandemic started.

Now we are into December, temperatures are finally where they supposed to be, in the 60s. Kitchen remodel plans are moving forward and Christmas is just around the corner. I pray for John and Tina daily because they both are on the front line in the medical field. Just as I pray for your safety too. These are hard times for everyone, some worse than others. Take time to share with others that may not be as fortunate.

Nancy and I wish you ALL a joyous, safe, healthy and blessed holiday season.

Thanksgiving - the meaning

What does Thanksgiving mean to you? I believe most of us think of it a a big meal with family and/or friends. And I think that is the way most people celebrate it ... most. Some people go to a restaurant for their Thanksgiving meal, some have a more subdued meat, possibly frozen, and some have none at all. Many 'front liners' eat on the run while rushing to treat the sick or injured. I did that for 26 years.

But I think of Thanksgiving as a time of reflection on my life, good and bad, and what I have to be thankful for, which is a lot. Yes I love "breaking bread" with my family and friends, and probably eating too much. I like reminiscing about when I did not have much and realizing what I have today. I think about my parents, who are long past, and good times I had with them. I think about friends and work mates  who are also gone. I think about the children and adults who are hungry and have to depends on other for food. I think about the millions of unemployed who have lost their jobs and businesses because of today's virus pandemic. All of these thoughts and memories cause me to look around the table to see all I have to be thankful for. I have so much to be thankful for starting with my family and friends, mine and my family's heath, none of us are wealthy but still have good jobs, and finally, faith, love and joy for others.

The story is the Pilgrims started Thanksgiving after surviving harsh winters, poor crops and finally meeting Native Americans who helped them get through it all. So they sat all together, over food and gave thanks for surviving and to their new friends. I don't know if that  story is true but I like the thought.

Everyone has experienced bad times and good times, and instead of concentrating on just the bad, focus on the good to lighten your heart and views of your life. I believe that would make you a more positive and happier person, and happiest is catching. Pass the good vibes along to others.

In the midst of our present election times, that idea could very well improve the atmosphere away from the hate that seems to be around lately. The election is OVER, so let's get on with being good Americans and transfer to administration to the winners.

All that being said, I and Nancy wish you a healthy, loving, joyous and thankful Thanksgiving holiday. Take care and stay safe.

Finally, it's over...but is it?

Probably a decade ago, I got really turned off with a show called "The Apprentice". The way Donald Trump could not tolerate some people he hired to do a task, and in his eyes, they failed.

Fast forward to 2015 when he declared he was running for the Office of US President, I was appalled he could ever think of disgracing the office or thought he could win. But in 2016, he did. Well, not the popular vote, but electoral votes. I was sickened.

This man who downgrades women, made fun of handicapped individuals and called vets 'losers' if they were captured in combat, just made me sick. He made enemies of our allies, turn his nose up at climate change, and did little to protect the citizens from a pandemic. Believe me, I was elated to hear Joe Biden won in the 2020 election.  But is really over?

Trump and his team have filed hundreds of lawsuits over the election and stated he was victorious and won the election, and the election was rigged. Do you realize why? He can not stand to lose anything. I read in a New York paper where Trump lose a huge real estate deal several years ago. He hustled outside to his limo, closed the shades and cried like a spoiled baby he is.

Joe Biden may not be the best candidate for president, but he is the only choice we had. We COULD NOT stand another 4 years with Trump running this country. It is going to take more than 4 years to get us back to the proud country we were. I am not saying we did not have faults before Trump, but we are on the verge of civil unrest after his presidency.

Once the supports of Trump had a taste of his reign, they won't give up, like a breast with their taste of fresh meat, they want more.

I don't dislike Trump supporters, I just do not like their views. Some have called democrats radical, I believe some Trump supports are more radical than any democrat I have seen.

The race is over, but the war continues. I advise you ALL to be cool and do what you can to paraphrase Trump, "Make the United States great again."

Take care, stay safe and God have mercy on the Untied States.

It is time to show your power

Today is November 1st. Only two days from now you can show your power by voting. As a citizen, you DO have the power of saying who will run this great country.

Voting is the strongest voice in our country. The people are the force that dictates what happens. Commercials and social media can influence you in many ways, but only you can cut through the 'fake' information to the real truth.

It does not matter where you live, where you went to school, what your parents or friends think, that vote is yours and ONLY YOURS. Do your homework, research the issues and you will realize the true for yourself.

I don't vote along party lines. I vote for the best person to keep our country strong and free. I served in our military like all of my family males have ever since 1775 to keep us free. I DO NOT like a country or individuals to hack into our system trying to sway the results of OUR election. And I know you do not either.

The rumor of mail in ballots will corrupt the election is false.  If you're afraid, then vote in person, but vote your consensus, not someone else.

Lies are being thrown from either side of the political isle. Look for the truth and VOTE.

Generalization

When you speak about a group of people, do you group them all together? For instance, "Those black people" or "Those Democrats" or"Those people in the South side". If you do, you are generalizing that ALL 'those' people are bad or good. Categorizing a group of a certain group, religion, color, race or affiliation is wrong. What you are saying is ALL people in that particular group is bad or wrong. That is usually not true. Yes, there are radials in every group.

Nancy and I have trip all over the world meeting many cultural groups from Muslims, to Indian to Orientals, to Blacks, browns, to LGBT and, yes many whites. We have many good friends in ALL of these groups. Anytime we have been with people from any of these groups, we have always been treat with friendly open arms and kindness. We have been offered and excepted an invite to stay in their homes, and share a meal with them. In turn, we have offered them to do the same.

I believe each person should be judged on their own characteristics and personality, not the color of their skin, religion or political believes. Determining whether you want to be friends with them or not in a personalized 'gut feeling'. Just because the other person does not like the present politician, or share your views on religion, or who should be your team's quarterback, does not mean you can not be friends, or feel passion for their efforts.

So many times I hear a reference of "those people in the MOB" or because someone has many tattoos you automatically think they are in a gang or a biker. Get to know the person before making up your mind. Preconceived opinions often come from childhood and escalate as we get older. Parents or friends may have convenient you to believe the way they see the world and people. Most people naturally believe opinions that see a group or person in a bad light. Just watch the political commercials. They always show someone's mistakes or find something bad about that person or group in hopes of turning you against that person or group.

You must be better that, and do your homework or research to find the true facts. Just following someone else lead does not show well on you. Be that fact checker before you decide if they are good or bad. One of my favorite quotes is, "Opinions are like butts, everyone has one. Some smell and other are clean." Also we all hear, "Never judge a book by its cover."

And finally, just because you associate with someone, does not necessarily mean you share the same ideas, opinions or philosophy. So beware of others grouping you in that crowd. Association does not mean your are guilty, unlike you are.

The bottom line is, just because you are black, brown, Muslim, Republican, Democrat, or whatever, you can make your own determination about groups and individuals. You ARE SMARTER than the per-judging people.😏

I invite you to comment.

What is your REAL age?

Yesterday was my birthday. Yup, another year older, 74. Scary huh? I am getting closer to the three quarter of a century mark. What worries me, and I am sure, most people is that I can't do what I use to do when I was 30 or 40 or maybe 50... well maybe 30.

Anyone that is around me lately knows I still do a lot of stuff I did when I was 40 or 50. I don't know if most people can say that. Some think they can, and when they do, they are hurt for the next week. I am not bragging. I am just saying I am fortunate and driven to be active and have the drive to do things.

I see men younger than I who look and act ten years older than me. So when I am down on myself, I think 'That is what I COULD look like'.

I truly believe staying active, both physically and mentally is how you keep yourself young. Not sitting around watching TV or just being lazy. I will admit there are times when I am hurting and just have to sit and do nothing. But when I can, I am up and going (mostly in my shop working on cars or trucks, or maybe building stuff, hiking or on my gym equipment).  I will also admit, there are people who can not be that active because of injuries or health issues. That is a given. There are 74 year old men and women that can leave in their dust. I have seen them in action, and they are awesome. They are truly driven in a sport, or working.

My point is, being 50, 60 or 74 does not give you permission to be a couch potato. We live in a very privileged country which has a lot of distractions from participating in physical activates such as running, hiking, walking, biking, softball, swimming or volunteering.

Our country, on an average, is one of the most overweight countries in the world.  The advantage to being active, it is good for your heart, it is good for your lungs, it builds muscles, and you'll lose weight. Some people actually get a 'high' from exercise, especially if they push themselves. But don't push TOO hard. Just a brisk walk in the morning as far as you can go, then try to increase it a little more each day.

Before you do any exercise, stretch your legs, back and arms. loosen those muscles first, and drink water during and after your exercise.

You'll feel better about yourself mentally and physically. But as always, consult with trainers, and or with your doctor if you have health considerations.

Just one little brag on my part, when I was 15 years old I weighed 178 pounds... I still do. But gravity has shifted some parts around, unfortunately.

Take care, stay safe and go out there.

Your vote IS your voice

In 37 days, we, as a nation, will be electing the next President of the United States, Senators, Federal and State Representatives, and many other officials. It's not an easy job to sort out the best to lead us, or represent our views. That is your homework, to research each candidate and see where they stand on the issues you cherish, or don't cherish. You want someone who loyal to the people and not out to boost their ego, or gain money by sucking-up with big corporations and extremists, no matter which side of the isle they sit. We saw enough of extremists on 9-11. Someone who thinks like the people about major issues, like discrimination, climate, women's rights, getting alone with other countries, gun rights, law enforcement, believes and follows professional scientific advise, diplomatic issues, and most of all, ACTING like a President. I am sorry to say, we do not have many that do those officials.

NEVER, EVER think your vote does not count, because it does. Voting is a privilege you have as a US citizen. Whether you vote by mail or in-person, you are the voice of America stating what you want and who you want to represent you and this country. Yes, you are one drop in an ocean, but remember the ocean is a powerful force as many millions of drops. So think of your vote as part of the ocean, not a drop.

You have to be blind and deaf to not see and hear the unrest our country is in today. You see it in daily newscast on TV, in the newspaper, in magazines, on racist radical blogs, everywhere. We need leaders who are strong and determined to turn the rage into peace. A leaders to break out of the traditional political ways of double talk and be straightforward. A leader who actually listens to the popular vote, not a bunch of electorates. The electorate college DOES NOT represent the majority of the voters. And popular vote DOES NOT match the person who gets elected. That is NOT "For the people and by the people", as the Declaration Of Independence and Constitution states.

Both political parties have their faults and people who are not what this country needs. Those leaders need to retire or start listening to the people, and quit arguing about what the other party does and does not do. Insults does not do anything except draw more insults and bickering.

By now, you probably know where I stand. I don't like Trump or the leaders of BOTH houses. But I DO believe it all starts at the top. As in any company, the C.E.O. or president is ultimately responsible for any mishaps or consequences. All that 'crap' rolls down hill and affects us all, one way or another.

Believe it or not, the United States is always dependent on other countries for things we don't produce. To survive, you have to create a community of countries. For some reason, we have dismissed that philosophy by telling other countries and organizations, "We don't need you" is like slowly cutting our own throats for the future.

We live in (what use to be known) as the most powerful country in the world. Can you honestly say that now? I can not. Our President has turned this country into a rebellious solid brat that thinks shooting Police and killing innocent people with rogue troops is acceptable.  Where you can call a person who serves there country in the military 'losers' if they get killed. Where a president insults a woman who accuses of improper sexual acts. Where the president refuses to leave office even if he loses. And when he does lose, he'll claim the election was rigged. If it was rigged, it's because of his friend in Moscow. THAT is the president we have now.

If you are wondering, I am registered as an Independent, neither right nor left. I vote for what is right for all.

I URGE you to register to vote, if you have not, and then VOTE your conscience. No matter who you vote for...VOTE!!! I invite your comments.

We need to stand up and speak out!

Years ago,I attended a Black cultural expo. I did that because I wanted to know more about my black brothers and sisters, understand their stories and history. I was born in central Alabama where black folks were not allowed in town after dark and in some businesses. As a child, I saw many discriminating actions against blacks. Black people knew not to push the issue in that and so many other towns and cities in fear of further repercussions. Even as a child, I knew that was just not right.
Today, we say we have progressed from those times. I many ways I don't think so. The recent shootings of black men and women is just sicking. Yes, black DO have a right to protest and hopefully in a peaceful manner. The looters are not part of that. They are just taking advantage of the event, and that is not right. They are the criminals and make things worse for the peaceful protesters.
As for the Police, well, the police departments across the nation need to teach their officers correct tactics when confronted with protesters. The PD department are still using the tactics from the 60s, and we all know that does not work.
And then there is the present administration who sends in "storm troopers" to make things even worse. Hate feeds off of hate. When the leader speaks out, or gets angry about certain things that are happening in the country (that he just does not get), his staff members may take inappropriate measures to please the leader. Of course the leader may be brain dead and lashes out at people who do not agree with him.
Criticizing a person for being female, African-Americans, Latinos, the medical experts about COVID 19, the physically impaired or handicapped, is NOT the way ANY leader of a country should act, talk, or be seen by the public. I seldom watch the news. But when I do, I am appalled at his incompetent remakes and actions. His own family has said he should not have been elected. I can agree with that.
I vote for the best person, not down party lines.  I am registered as an Independent. I would be the first to admit the Democrats have not had the best candidates running. But they better than Trump. Joe Biden is the country's hope for now. Some of Trump's "want-to-be's" do their share of "hate bashing" against their revivals in their interviews and political commercials. That attitude feeds of to the public, and before long, the stories have evolved into lies. And people remember the lies more that the truth, unfortunately. Time to clean up the Police departments, clean up the campaigning bashing, and time to clean up the White House.
You have the power to do that by voting and vote your conscience, search your soul, do your research, vote WITHOUT prejudice. Vote for the truth. VOTE!!!
I invite you to post your comments too. Take and stay safe.

Are you bored?

It's been five month since we went into hibernation and had to limit our travels and staying out of groups of people. It has been tough on many of us. People have lost their jobs and some lost their businesses. Being together is in our nature and essential to our well being. We get depressed if we can not go to a movie, hug each other, shake hands, or church and even go out to eat. I know, me too. But, I have not been bored for a lack of something to do. As I will show you in a moment.

The worse part of this whole COVID 19 thing is the TV show AND ADS we are forced to watch. Yeah, I could just turn the boob-TV off, but I can't. That is my rest time before dinner. Unconscious relaxation. But I have to endue the ads about attorneys, medicare, insurance companies and pharmaceutical drug products. I really hate those. I guess I may watch too much mid-day TV, but it helps me relax my mind from other than engine RPMs, torque values, headers and tire sizes.

Speaking of that... here is what Nancy and I are doing. She is so very talented. Not only does she hike at 5 AM when it's only 85 and nobody but creatures are out (that is cool for us. Usually it is well over 100 degrees during the day), but she is an accomplished quilter. She surprises me often (which is not hard to do) when she shows me her latest work of art.

Me, oh... I have a couple projects going on too. Not as artistic as Nancy's, just dirtier.

From the top. 1955 Chevy 1st series 3/4 ton pickup I bought from a retired firefighter and I am keeping it totally stock, 6 volt, engine, everything, except electronic ignition. My project.
Then a 1974 International Scout for a client. I am fixing a lot of things the previous owners screwed up including carburetor, suspension, new interior, exhaust, stereo, wiring, and so much more.
Then there is the 1962 Ford Ranchero which belongs to a friend and he is helping with the total rebuild, engine, transmission, suspension, rear differential, interior and so on. really a TOTAL rebuild.
But back to being bored, I am not. Nancy and I do go out and practice social distancing, wear mask (that she made, of course) and don't get into large crowds. Maybe at the grocery. We both wash our hands often. People would look at me funny if I didn't wash my greasy hands.
I truly hope you are doing the same, and I'd love to hear what you are doing to keep your mind off the present things. Comment, call (602-390-6265) or email me at cruisin36@gmail.com
We miss you all, and someday we get together with hugs and hand shakes. Take care and stay safe.

When will we all get out?

For the last 4 or 5 posts I have made, the topic, or at least some of the post, has been about the Covid 19 Virus. I apologize about that because it seems that many of our individual conversations ARE about the Covid 19 virus. I spend the majority of my days in my shop working on cars or trucks and seldom go out unless it is for parts that are not delivered to the shop. But today was different. Today, I went out to a restaurant and had lunch with 4 of my friends and retired firefighters. Guess what the main topic was? And then it turned over to another hot topic, politics. Both which I hate to discuss with friends and family. Why? Because I have my own views and I hate to argue with my loved ones about my views opposed to theirs.  Most times I just bite my tongue and change the subject, or move the topic to the side.
Today was different because these guys sucked me in with options that I just could NOT agree with. I love these guys like brothers but I REALLY hate to debate "GODS" of other religions as opposed to my believes. Just like I hate to debate the current president as opposed to upcoming presidential candidates. No one is going to change anyone's mind or opinions.
Same about the Covid 19. Some believe it is a hoax, and other think it is a true threat. There are MANY theories on Covid 19 and I rely on the scientists to figure out what is what, BUT I do know the stats we are all given are not quite accurate. I know of 5 nurses who went to get tested, and never were tested because of the lengthy wait. They ALL received results of POSITIVE. So I believe the stats are askew.
The second point I want to make is the restrictions we are all given by our governors and the federal government are not inline. One says open-up and the other says close everything.
My thoughts are: 1. Mask up when in public. 2. DON'T go into big groups. 3. If you have the symptoms the CDC has announced (and there many), stay home, and away from people. It's common sense. Americans are stupid when it comes to this stuff. They think, "Oh I am not going to get this." And then they do and die. I don't think this will go away soon, but it will go away sooner if we all try harder.
As far as my hard core ... I don't even know what to call them, I love them and I'll deal with it.
I love you all, stay safe, stay in touch.

My views today

It's another wonderful Sunday morning here in Arizona with wildfire burning all around us, but not TOO close. I ate enough smoke in my firefighting career and really don't want to do it in my retirement years, but what choice do I have? The wind is a Mother Nature thing. At this time, Arizona has about 12 fires being worked, mainly human caused, unfortunately. I will try to keep this pretty short, but don't get upset if I begin to ramble on somewhat. I do that often. As you all are aware, we are in middle of the third month of this COVID-19 Pandemic. And we all are pretty sick of it. We want to go to a movie, go to church in person, hug and kiss friends and family, that don't live with us. I want to go into stores without wearing a mask and not be afraid of sneezing or coughing. It is tough and we are tired of it, BUT WE HAVE TO KEEP IT UP. Some places opened up too soon and now are seeing a spike in cases. Bars opened way too soon and some churches. Get smart people. I am not afraid of getting sick myself, but I don't want to infect others. PLEASE, wear a mask if you go out into public. Next, I am sick of the racial problems we ALL are experiencing. People say to defund the Police or eliminate the Police. That is really stupid. We have many laws in the United States, and who will enforce them? We need the Police, but we need to re-train them and fire the bad apples. NOT ALL COPS ARE BAD!!! There are some bad ones who make the news and portray the entire law enforcement community as bad. Yes, Police department started from land owners hiring people to retrieve slaves that ran away from plantations and farms. Let us ALL transform that mentality by way of peaceful protests not radical ones. Burning stores, looting and shooting Police officers is not the right way. And to the Police, when you get so many report of police brutality by an officer is an indication of a bad officer or someone who really needs to be re-trained now or to be fired and prosecuted. ALL lives matter, no matter of what color, creed, nationality, or sexual orientation. We are ALL from the same race ... the human race. And finally, we are only a few months away from a presidential election, and I think we all know who the candidates will be. I really don't care what party is elected IF the person works to bring this country back to the caring, strong and peaceful country it was before 2016. Radical speeches, threats to countries, different nationalities living in the USA or trying to come to the USA, and blatantly lying about things you said recently, SHOULD NOT BE OUR PRESIDENT! I have dear friends who are gay, black, Mexican, and Chinese. I am embarrassed and angry when things are said slamming or actions taken against people of color or about nationalities because one people from them is bad. They are not ALL bad!! We DO NOT need a president who like that. I will not apologize for my views, but if you search your soul for the truth, you too will realize the present "Commander in Chief" (and I use that term loosely) is not the person we need in office. I also realize, the Democrats may not have the best candidate running either, but I feel he is better than the present. Everyone has their own views and I accept them as theirs and respect them. To me, there is an obvious change needed in November. I know this blog has seen a change since I started it several years ago. It was to be about our travels and photos of family and friends. The quarantine changed a lot. If you have a debate, question, comment or just want to say "Hey", please leave me a note here or through email at cruisin36@gmail.com or call me at 602-390-6265. Take care, stay safe and vote.

No one will deny things are different, but, we may not have it that bad.

Through this pandemic, I believe there are three types of people dealing with it. There are the ones who have tightly locked themselves and family down. Then there are those who go along with the news, maybe still go out but cautiously and sometimes wear a mask. Giving other their space and trying not to panic others. That's probably Nancy and I. And finally there are those who are fearless, never wear a mask and shake their heads at those who are very protective from infection. Which one are you? Let me know. Last night, my daughter shared an interesting statement she saw on a social media channel. I have no idea who the author is, but it hit home for me, so I thought I would share it with you too. PLEASE READ THE WHOLE THING.
Stay safe, but don't panic.

It's getting hotter around here, in more than just temperture

I couple weeks ago, as Nancy and I drove to Lowe's for something, I noticed smoke come from our canyon where our home is located. I told Nancy it looked like a wildland (brush) fire because the color of the smoke. When we drove up our road home, the smoke became more intense. To the East of us on the mountain was a line of fire working its way North and creeped up the mountain, becoming dangerously close to three houses. I stopped to ask a firefighter what channel the fire was on. When we arrived home, we listened to the Caisson portable radio. The fire soon became a three alarm fire with multiple departments joining in. Was the wind going to shift toward us, would homes, animals or lives be lost? It was a time of tension. The fire slowly but steady moved to the Northeast. Aerial bombing of reddish fire retardant by large jets as helicopters doused the hot spot still smoldering with water. I had to step outside and get some photos.
For the next two days, the fire worked its way around the mountain and into the regional county park East of our home. Finally on the third day, the fire was contained and put to rest. It consumed 1496 acres first. It was called the East Desert Fire. But not the end of the story. Yesterday, Our granddaughter called us to ask if we had another fire close by. We ran outside, looked around and said, "Not that we could see." An hour or so later, we heard there was another wildland fire North of the town proper of Cave Creek was roaring. Just North of the Rancho Manana resort and golf course. The fire grew consuming three homes, stables and a few out building. Within a few hours, the fire had grown to over 1200 acres and was threatening several more homes. Now, as I sit looking out my office window, I see huge billowing clouds of smoke floating over Tonto National Forest land to the Northeast. The wind has not been very helpful today either. This is the worse time for wildland fires in the Southwest. Dried out desert plants, gusty winds often switching directions quickly and humans not being careful in these ignitable times. The East Desert fire was human started and I wonder what started the "Ocotillo"fire, as this one is called. Stay safe out there.

Are we in the NEW NORMAL?

What's it been now, three months since the news media went haywire over the COVID 19? Soon after, the lock-down occurred and the world came to a halt. I don't really watch the news (for years) and figure if there is anything I REALLY need to know, I'll hear about it from someone. News broadcast are so darn bias, one way or the other. I am curious to what things have really changed in your lives, other than the stuff we hear and see on the newscast. I actually don't think much has changed in Nancy and my lives. Nancy is dealing with her mother and moving her into a assisted group home and getting her financial affairs organized. And even tho it stresses Nancy, she has done an outstanding job. We probably see more of our grandkids now. Our one granddaughter and her friend (who like another grandchild) has been coming over and putting together small cuddle quilts for themselves. Of course Nancy is coaching them. I have been working in the shop almost daily and have most of my parts delivered, as usually done. This is my latest purchase.
It is a 1955 Chevy 1st series 3/4 ton pickup truck. The bed has to be assembled, painted and put on. It is totally original. Three-on-the-tree and floor foot starter button. But runs like a well balanced sewing machine. Our doctor daughter's office just re-opening to the ladies for exams, but I believe hospitals are still closed for elective surgeries. So it is probably out of the question for me to get a 'nose-job'. Bummer! We have a friend who was told by her 'higher-ups' in her corporation, that EVERYONE (except drivers and other hands-on employees) will, from now on work from home. How did that work-out for the teachers? I know my oldest grandson loved that. What I miss is going out to dinner. Sit down and order from a real menu, a nice glass of wine served by our waiter and then they bring our meal, all steamy and yummy, with no dishes to wash. Now the dining experience is drive-thru at the local burger barn or Mexican place. It means we have to cook more. We don't have that many leftovers. Our freezer is drained of previously cooked menus we made too much of. Since we don't eat red meat, it is usually chicken, fish or pork, but now pork is hard to get. Non-fat milk is gone most of the time. I think those hoarders who bought up all the toilet paper bought the milk too.
I was in an Ace Hardware a few days ago when a gentleman came up to me. I could see he was skeptical about passing by me as he jockeyed from side to side, so I took one giant step back from him, when he said, "Give me some room man!" He was probably ten feet ago and he wanted some room? He had a mask, gloves and BOOTIES on. All he needed was gown. People really freaked out about this virus. I am cautious but not crazy cautious. I see people wearing mask while they drive in a car all by themselves. Are they afraid to infect themselves? You got to laugh and just enjoy it. People who pull their mask down under their nose... I want to say, "Hey lady, you know you can suck that virus up you nose, right?" Anyway... are we going to be this way in the fall, winter or next year? The President can't open the country up, neither can the individual states, or cities/towns, it is the companies, the shops, the stores and US. When we are over the panic, we will open up. I just hope it is not too soon. Until then, we are left with drive-thru and re-run TV. Oh well, I have plenty of channels, but running low on TP... could you send us a few sheets, thanks! Let me know how you life has changed and follow my stupid blog. I can't write about our travels since we can't travel... but SOMEDAY!

We are in this together ... Alone

After WW1 and WW2, the soldiers were the heroes. After 9-11 the Firefighters and Police Officers were the heroes. Today it is many people who are on the front line to help us all get through this. Nurses, doctors, firefighters, grocery store workers and so many more. But one group of people should join that group of heroes is the Food bank volunteers. Gathering food for those who lost their jobs and don't have money to buy food or their rent or their car insurance. Food bank workers stand outside at the drive-thru passing out boxes and bags of food as the people drive thru with their trunks open. Sometimes the drivers sit in lines that clog traffic for as much as 6 hours to get flour, cereal, orange juice and milk. Some of those volunteers are jobless too, but yet they help others.
Then there is the medical staff. Putting themselves at risk to help others, sometimes without proper protective garments, and yet they share it or take it home to wash them. people coming out of retirement because their local hospital needs help. And again, some of them are laid-off and hurting themselves.
As a retired firefighter, I know we walked into many homes to see a seriously ill people, or called to a scene of a car accident and never knew what we were getting into. I saw many diseases in my career. From HIV to SARS to TB to anything you could imagine. I have been spattered with blood, and other body fluids, several times, but never caught anything be maybe a cold. allergies is my biggest enemy. All of these people, plus thousands of other professions, deserve our thanks and help. Grocery store employees, garage men, postal workers, police officers, all are still working out there to keep our cities and towns going. I have a friend who is a funeral home director. Imagine her job when the deceased's family needs to grieve but is not allowed to hold a proper funeral with family members. My friend has to help the families arrange the single person funeral by way of 'Face Time' or 'Zoom' on phones and computers. A person is in the last hours at a hospital, and their wife, son, husband, daughter can not come in the room to comfort the person in their hours of life. Another friend had to literally drop her very ill husband at the hospital doorstep, because she could go in with him. Nurses and doctors quarantine themselves for fear to bring COVID-19 home. Yes, we ALL are in this together, but many are alone. Many need help, whether it is food, financial or just a friendly call. All I am asking you is to share the love you may have to others ANYWAY YOU CAN. Stay in touch with family, friends, the old man or lady down the street or the apartment in you building. Many are fighting this alone. You could be their lifeline. Please help in your way. Take care, stay safe and health.

This is a VERY strange time

This is the strangest time in the world's history since the 1918 flu epidemic. People are panicking about items in the stores they think they will need in case they are forced to stay indoors or home for a long duration. People are buying ammo and guns, for what reason? New movies are not being released because theaters are closed, reporters are broadcasting from home or a secure studio. People move farther away from you as you walk by them. Grocery store are trying to restock their empty shelves, but their employees are calling in sick so the stores are hiring temporary help, which are people who are laid-off from their normal jobs. No one can go out to eat a nice dinner because all the restaurants are closed. Drive-thru or take out are the only options. Businesses are being forced to close their doors for fear of spreading the Covid-19. What impresses me the most is the companies are stepping up to help, in whatever way they can. Donating money to the unemployed, giving money to funds that help the people who living paycheck to paycheck. Actors broadcasting words of encouragement, "We will get through this together" or "We are all in this together". Nancy and I are helping, in a small way, by giving our stimulus money, we MAY get, to employees who have had their hours cut. Even our daughter, the doctor, is cutting her pay by 50% to keep her practice above water during these times. America IS coming to together to help each other. And that makes me proud. This is not an American thing, it's a worldwide thing, and we all have to suffer somewhat to get through these times. All countries are hurting, some more than others. We are blessed to be in the United States where we response to emergencies rapidly and help others. As a retired firefighter, I saw my share of emergencies. I don't panic easily and neither should you. Follow the safety rules given by World Health Organization, and stay calm. This too will pass.

Hold on and stay calm.

This is a super crazy time, not only the United States, but worldwide. We are constantly hammered with gloom and doom messages on the news, internet and social media. people are fighting in the aisles of stores over a roll of toilet paper or a case of water. What has gotten into us. There are no zombies coming. The world is not ending. It's a virus that most people recover from. Yes, there are deaths and there WILL be more. But it does not mean we are going to killed or forced to go underground. By buying ONLY what you need (like a normal shopping trip to the market), not what you think you have to have, the stores can get back to normal, and we can go back to a semi-normal status. These things will pass if we ALL help by following the simple rules given to us 20 times a day on the different media branches. Wash your hands often, (as we should anyway), cough or sneeze into tissues or the crook of your arm, stay away from crowds, DON'T, I repeat, DON'T mistrust orientals just because you think they all carry the virus, buy only what you need at stores and not what you think you need, and stay home as much as possible. Stay in touch with friends and family members by phone, face time or email. And the biggy, DO NOT PANIC! Panic is catching worse than the virus. I hope you will pass this on and keep others calm. In 1974 I saw people fighting over gasoline at a gas station because they thought the world was going to run out. We got through that, and WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS TOO!!! I love you all. And if you want to call me and just talk, please do. just give me some time to crawl out from under a car. Nancy is doing her quilting and I am working on cars, business as usual, like we all should be doing. Even this will pass. Take care, hold on and stay calm.

What irritates you?

I really hate the complain or spill my heart about things that we all see and others do daily, but some things really get under my skin and I have to releases them. So be patient. Many years ago, all we had was O.T.A. (over the air) TV. I wanted to see more things and get away from commercials so I moved over the cable TV. Well that lasted for a few years and the commercials eventually came into the programming. So I switched to satellite. It was great... for a few yew years, them commercials crept into to that too. There was nothing else, so I made up my mind to stick it out for a FEW stupid commercials, like GEICO and PROGRESSIVE insurances. They make us all look stupid. Then the commercials grew to sometimes 10 or 15 commercials during the breaks. OUTRAGEOUS!! I'd sit there counting them and complaining to my better half. When the renewal and sign-up time for Medicare comes every year, I figured October 31 this will end them because, for those not on Medicare yet that when the sign-up time ends. Oddly enough, the ads kept running. WHAT THE HELL? Did I mention, I hate insurance companies? Well, I do. Along with attorneys. OK, going on. Do you say words you shouldn't when driving, some one turns or changes lanes with a turn signals, I do. All cars and trucks come with a turn signal lever on the steering wheel but no one knows what it used for, or does not care. The ones that really gets me is the driver in the fast lane who cuts over three lanes to catch his exit lane he did not per-plan for and does not use turn signal to tell people, "HERE I COME". Idiots! People are skidding, jamming on their brakes, honking their horns as he speeds off. WHAT A JERK! He was probably on his cell phone or jamming to the radio when he realizes, "Oh my God, I have to turn here." Which brings me to my next gripe. Cell phones. Listen folks, cell phones are no longer PHONES. They are cameras, radios, Instagram-ers, typewriters, game machines, and have been and always will be a mini computer for face-time-ing conference calling and strolling through the internet. Don't forget texting too. When I was younger, you had to pull over to a curb or gas station and find a pay phone, drop a coin or two in it so you could call someone. Then rotate the dial to your number. OK, I am dating myself, I know I am old. At my house, we make everyone put their phones in a away place at dinner time, so we can talk. The grandkids hate that. Look around the next time you are at the doctor's office waiting to be called at all the other people looking at their phones, thumbing it up, down or sideways instead of reading an outdated magazine they have laying around. Don't get me wrong, I use my phone a lot too. When I got my first cell phone, it weighed about four phones and signals were not that strong. Then I went to a car mounted phone which was amplified. From there I have a Star Trek flip phone and finally a smart (dumb) phone which talks to me. It's crazy. I can do everything on that phone that I can do on my desktop computer. It has more memory and power than they had on the first trip to the moon. When I tell people to call me, they text me. It literally become my leash and I am the dog. Who's controlling the leash? Probably insurance companies and attorneys. OK, I am done here... for now. Even tho I am sick and feeling sorry for myself, I feel a little better announcing my gripes on a COMPUTER. Thanks for listening and come back soon. Love you all.
